VMware WSX TP2 now available including a Windows release

“Virtual Machines in Your Browser”, it sounds cool right? A few months ago the first “WSX” Technical Preview was released. VMware engineer Christian Hammond has now released the second release which includes a Windows installer and some major updates. This means that if you haven’t tried the software due the fact that it was only running on Linux you now have a chance to test it!

Keep in mind that this software is experimental at the moment and there is no date known when this will be officially released.

You can download it on the Workstation Technology Preview 2012 forum. Just click “Downloads” and select either the Windows or Linux installers.

A quick list on updates in the new release (for details read the official blog post):

  • Windows Installer
  • Better Performance
  • Retina display support on iOS
  • Speech-to-Text support on iOS
  • Beginnings of Android Compatibility
  • Some UI improvements

With this release there are a few bug fixes:

  • Connecting to vSphere no longer totally fails.
  • Pressing Control-Alt-Delete now actually sends that to the VM.
  • WSX no longer disconnects when updating the screen resolution fails.
  • If you connect to multiple servers, the inventories should be correct on each server.

There is also 1 known bug for the moment:

  • Occasionally, the screen may stop updating. There’s a Reload button you can press to re-establish the connection to the VM’s display.

I suggest reading the following offical blog posts for more information and screenshots regarding WSX:

  1. WSX: Virtual Machines in Your Browser
  2. VMware WSX TP2: Faster, Shinier, and Less Broken

I must say this is impressive, I myself have experimented with the first Linux version. Time to test the second version on both Windows and Linux.
